Keeping your New Year’s Resolutions

It’s been over a week since you made your resolutions. You have been eating salads with your dinner, going to the gym, and you hid your credit card in your sock drawer. Congratulations on taking the first steps! But if you want to turn your resolutions into habits which will help you achieve your goals, read on to learn some tips…
 
BE SPECIFIC
Rather than the amorphous “exercise more,” choose how you will do it. Find a spin class at a local gym and commit to going to the 7:00 am class Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Or resolve to take the stairs rather than the elevator at work. Make a plan with your spouse or a friend to go for a 30 minute walk every night after dinner. If you live in an area where the weather turns cold this year, go to your local mall and take your walk there.
 
AUTOMATE
Make it as easy on yourself as you can to stay on track. If your goal is to save money, decide the amount, divide by the number of paychecks you receive in a year, and have that amount automatically deposited into your savings account. If moving more is one of your resolutions, wear a pedometer and track your steps. When you are low for the day, you will know you need to add in an extra half hour walk in the evening.
 
PLAN FOR SUCCESS
If your goal is to spend more time with your family or friends, schedule activities together and put them on your calendar. If you don’t schedule the things you want, other things will take precedence. If you have resolved to eat healthier, set aside an afternoon, once a week, to go to shopping and prepare healthy meals and snacks for the entire week. When you are pressed for time, it will still be easy to stay on track.
 
BE ACCOUNTABLE 
Maybe you are trying to lose weight, but don’t really count that handful of M&Ms as a “cheat.” Use a food journal like fitbook.com to count your calories for you, and commit to logging everything you put into your mouth. If you want to learn a new skill or language, sign up for a class with a friend and commit to meeting each other there every week.
 
GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK
If you fall off track, slip up, or have a bad day, don’t let it get you down. Your resolutions are a plan to reach your goals. Tomorrow is a new day, and a new opportunity to do your best. Just because you stumble, it doesn’t mean you should give up.
